The adenylate kinase (AK) technology relies on the test assaying the level of the AK enzyme as a marker for organic contamination (in addition to ATP). AK catalyses the following reaction: - ATP + AMP <---> 2 ADP
If ADP is used as the substrate and provided in excess the reaction is driven to the left. This provides a linear amplification of ATP over time, which can then be measured using the luciferase/luciferin enzyme system.
